The Buteyko Breathing Method of breathing retraining
Nicky McLeod suffered from epilepsy but healed herself of seizures by correcting her dysfunctional breathing using the Buteyko breathing method. Her story is a powerful testimony. She took a Buteyko breathing course to help her husband with his snoring and within the first week of that course, that was the end of her seizures and over the next 6-8 months weaned off her medication and she has been seizure and drug free for the last 8 years. Nicky is now a Breathing Educator and Associate Buteyko Practitioner.
In this interview we delve into the topic of breathing retraining with the Buteyko method, the epidemic of over breathing, mouth breathing, how the more one breaths the less oxygen one gets, the conditions linked to dysfunctional breathing and hyperventilation. We discuss nitric oxide production during breathing and the cardio-respiratory system, and how breathing has a major impact on the cardiovascular system as well as the nervous system and when Wim Hof is contraindicated.
Nicky uses the capnography machine as a noninvasive method of breath analysis in face to face consultation. A capnography machine measures the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaled breath expressed as the CO2 concentration over time and she offers breathing assessments, in person and online coaching, tailoring breathing exercises to the individual needs of her clients. We discuss how there are different exercises for anxiety and asthma, proper nasal breathing, the diaphragm and breathing, mouth taping, and much more.
