Persecuted for pursuing excellence Dr Charlie Teo under siege
Top brain surgeon, Professor Charlie Teo has essentially been banned since July 2023, from operating in Australia in what could be best described as a medical witch hunt. The mainstream media has been complicit in not only failing to report fairly on the case against him but also making up lies about him including that he operated on the wrong side of the brain, in an ongoing campaign to destroy his personal and professional reputation. He has been subject to multiple ongoing character assassinations in the media. His story highlights the very dangerous degree of institutional oppression and coercion in Australia and how it destroys lives.
He is known for pioneering minimally invasive techniques for complex brain tumours deemed inoperable by many other surgeons. He has completed over 11,000 brain surgeries and he is one of only three surgeons in the world that can perform brainstem glioma surgeries. Known as a “miracle worker”, Dr Teo devotes 3 months of every year instructing and doing live surgery pro bono in developing countries. At age of 67, he continues to operate and mentor neurosurgeons in other parts of the world with a low 6% complication rate compared to the average of 70%.
“If you step outside the box. If you offer contrary second opinions. Then we will get you. Because if we can get Charlie Teo. We can get anyone.”
He was banned based on the opinion of 2 neurosurgeons who had been highly critical of him, 1 lay person and a judge and his appeal to the same authority was unsuccessful. The two neurosurgeons had never done a brain stem glioma, where Dr Teo is a world authority on brain stem glioma, not only publishing research on it but also being one of three surgeons in the world able to successfully operate on them. It is an incredible testimony of how corrupt the medical system is, with the governing body operating as rogue boy’s club not basing decisions on Science but driven by personal jealousies and power trips. The appeal refused to even hear testimony of his record of 11,000 surgeries, academic record, excellent track surgical record but instead focused on the two cases which had been brought up by the two neurosurgeons with an axe to grind, not the families of the deceased patients, who were both terminal with only days and a few months left to live.
“Everyone thinks it was a court of law. It was not a court of law. So they don’t have to find proof beyond doubt. They get the opinion of a couple of your competitors, who have been publicly against me in the past… and it’s not just me. The whole process has been labelled as corrupt and lacking due process. There has been Royal Commissions, Senate Inquiries and they have all condemned the system.”
According to Dr Teo, due to his persecution not only is he unable to operate in Australia, but talented neurosurgeons are refusing to operate on patients that they could save, for fear of retribution. This is costing lives and stifling innovation in medicine, reducing care to the lowest common denominator.
“The system is broken. The system is where you have a governing body which is more or less like institutionalized narcissism and what I mean by that is that a narcissist controls, they use surveillance and they silence. And that is exactly what the governing bodies are doing. They control on the basis that they are doing it for the greater good. So under the guise of this omnipotent, good body that knows exactly how to bring stray doctors into control. So what that means is, that they basically, control by regulation, control by mandates, control by codes of conduct, and all those things are very reductionist.”
AHPRA has total authority and is accountable to no one and can do whatever it likes.
The message Dr Charlie Teo wants to give is for us to stay positive. That these hurdles and there for us to climb over and become bigger and better.
“The conversation we had before the podcast, both of us were disturbed and worried that it won’t change. We can’t think that way. People like you, Health Alliance Australia, people like me who have a voice, we will change the whole landscape of medicine and the way it is delivered and the way doctors are governed.”

“Brain cancer is killing more of our kids than any other disease in Australia,
yet is poorly funded compared to some other cancers.”
In keeping with his desire to find a cure for brain cancer he has raised over $53 million that has been used to fund research scientists both in Australia and abroad. He has done this through the Cure for Life Foundation, the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation (Charity of the Year 2016) and currently the Charlie Teo Foundation.
